ENDOCRINOLOGY
Lead by a Board Certified Endocrinologist, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Department offers the following professional services:

Diabetes: Diagnosis, treatment and continued follow-up of all types of diabetes.
The Department takes responsibility for the treatment and follow-up of complications to diabetes, including eye, heart, kidney, intestinal, and foot complications. The complications are diagnosed, treated and followed in close cooperation with the corresponding specialists in the Hospital. It is considered imperative to good clinical control of diabetes that each patient understands the causes of his disease and the principles of its treatment, so that he can actively participate in the choice of treatment and in the necessary continuing control of blood sugar and body weight. To this end the Department offers detailed, individual instruction and guidance by specially trained diabetes educators who are available to the patient on a continuing basis for explanation, advice, and assistance. A highly specialized dietician explains and suggests the necessary diet adjustments either as the only treatment, when possible, or as part of the medical treatment, when necessary. In-house group education of longer duration will be organized for patients, who will then be able to exchange their experience with diabetes with other patients.

Thyroid Diseases: Diagnosis and treatment of all thyroid diseases.
The Hospital has a fully equipped diagnostic hormone laboratory for common thyroid diseases. When more special hormone analyses are necessary, blood samples will be transferred to specialized laboratories abroad. The Hospital offers ultrasound, CT-scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for full immediate visualization of the thyroid gland. Fine-needle samples from the gland will be evaluated by the Hospital’s specialized Histopathologists. Most thyroid diseases will be treated at the Hospital, but treatment with radioactive iodine will be referred to outside hospitals, when necessary

Pituitary Gland Diseases: The Department has special experience and competence in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of hormonal diseases of the pituitary gland. The hormonal laboratory and high resolution MRI provide the necessary diagnostic tests. Treatment is carried out in cooperation with the Department of Gynecology, when necessary. The Department of Neurosurgery has special experience in minimally invasive operation of pituitary tumors, when medical treatment is not sufficient. Pituitary disease of children are diagnosed and treated in cooperation with the Department of Pediatrics.

Adrenal Diseases: Adrenal diseases of a wide variety are diagnosed and treated. Highly sensitive CT-scanning and MRI are available for imaging of even minute adrenal tumors. Specialized tests based on hormonal laboratory tests are performed. Hypertension caused by adrenal disease will be diagnosed. Infertility: Infertility, especially male infertility - but even female infertility caused by hormonal diseases - are diagnosed, treated, and followed in cooperation with the Department of Gynecology.

 Overweight: The Department diagnoses and treats hormonal causes of overweight. Most cases of overweight are due to simple overeating of calories combined with too little exercise. The Department will assist patients in attempts to reduce weight. A specialized dietician will analyze the patient’s present diet and suggest weight-reducing changes. Exercise programs will be designed individually by a physician specialized in physical therapy. Follow-up will be offered to the extent the patient feels a need for continuing encouragement.

GASTROENTEROLOGY

GI Services

Endoscopy Services: The department has an elegant endoscopy suite with the latest videoendoscopes with digital recording facility. It offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including biopsies, removal of foreign bodies, dilatation of strictures, treatment of GI bleeding, polypectomies, mucosal resections for treating early cancers and metallic stenting for palliative treatment of luminal cancers.

ERCP: This is a specialized endoscopy that deals with pathologies of bile duct and pancreatic duct. It is useful for evaluation and treatment of obstructive jaundice, pancreatitis, biliary and pancreatic infections, palliative treatment of biliary cancers etc.

Screening for GI Cancers: It provides screening services for early cancer detection. American Association of Gastroenterologists now recommends routine colonoscopy above the age of 50 years for all individuals for early detection of colorectal cancers. Screening for Barrett's esophagus and early esophageal cancer is also recommended for patients with chronic history in excess of five years of heartburn.

GI Manometry: GI manometry is a science that studies motion and pressure characteristics of various parts of GI tract. It is helpful in assessing patients with swallowing difficulties, obscure noncardiac chest or abdominal pain, constipation, anal incontinence etc.

Visceral sensitivity and biofeedback: The GI physiology lab offers facility to measure luminal sensitivity and biofeedback for the management of functional GI disorders, anal pain, anal incontinence etc.

Esophageal pH metry: It quantifies exactly the acid reflux episodes in a patient. It is required for the diagnosis and management of gastroesophageal reflux diseases particularly before surgical management. It is also very useful in the evaluation of chronic cough, bronchial asthma and chest pain.

Hepatology Services

Liver Biopsy: It offers percutaneous liver biopsies with ultrasound localization. The pathology department has facility for processing the tissue with special and objective stains. The liver biopsies are required to manage chronic hepatitis, unexplained elevation of
liver enzymes, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, various congenital liver diseases etc.

Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis: Hepatitis B and C are among the worst chronic morbid conditions which left untreated lead to terminal liver disease and liver failure. With advances in antiviral treatment and development of interferon, these are no more incurable diseases. The Department Of Pathology has a round the clock lab facility, supervised by experienced pathologists and qualified technicians. The lab is equipped with the most advanced automated machines in Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cytology and Histopathology.

Microbiology has the facility for Routine aerobic, anaerobic, blood cultures, fungal cultures and AFB cultures.

Histopathology, Exfoliative and Aspiration Cytology
Responsible for processing, staining and examining tissues removed from the body by syringe or operation, it helps in the diagnosis of various diseases, including cancer. Cytological examination to detect cancer cells by PAP technique for the cervix or body fluids and utilizing Fine Needle Aspiration (FNAC) for pre-operative diagnosis of lumps in various organs is also done.

Haematology and Blood banking
Equipped with automated cell counters, this section deals with estimating haemoglobin, numerical and morphological counting of the blood cells,examination of blood films, detection of parasites in blood (malaria), detection of abnormal haemoglobin,various blood-banking procedures (e.g., blood grouping, cross matching) and detection of blood-clotting system defects, among others.

Microscopy
This section carries out tests for urine, stool and various body fluids such as Cerebro Spinal Fluid, Synovial, Pleural and Ascetic fluid. Depending on the specimen and request submitted, besides microscopic detection of red cells, puss cells, ova or parasites, chemical examination (for e.g. proteins, sugar) is also done.

Chemical Pathology
The section deals with the analysis of chemical constituents of the blood such as Blood glucose, Cholesterol and Urea.

Endocrinology
Endocrine hormonal assays are carried out on modern automated machines and estimates of hormones from Pituitary, Thyroid, Ovaries or Testes have high value in assessing endocrine disorders.

Immunology
The laboratory offers a wide range of investigations in Serology and Immunology. Antibodies to many infectious agents (Hepatitis A, B & C, Toxoplasma, Rubella and Cytomegalo virus) are assayed.

Presence of antibodies to many infectious diseases such as HIV I and II, typhoid fever, brucellosis, antigen testing for Hepatitis virus and Chlamydia are done here.

Microbiology
This section deals with isolation and identification of infectious agents like bacteria and fungi. Sensitivity testing, which is finding an appropriate antibiotic for patients, is also carried out. Specimens like puss, urine, stools, sputum, pleural and peritoneal fluids, Cerebro Spinal Fluid, throat, ear, nose, urethral swabs, are sent to the laboratory for culture and sensitivity appraisals. Sputum smears
for tuberculosis as well as culture are performed in special safety cabinets.

Serological diagnosis for diseases, where the culture is negative is also performed, widal and brucellosis tests, for instance.

The Dietician co- ordinates and integrates clinical and administrative aspects of dietetics to provide quality nutritional care. The Dietician is available for consultation on all aspects of the patient’s nutrition including assessment, recommendations for nutritional management and implementation of therapeutic diet within the hospital. Dieticians also discuss nutritional needs for the family and can provide education on normal nutrition and modifications that may be required for special diets. There is also a healthy life style programme which is an innovative healthy eating and life style programme for adults and children of all ages. Medical nutrition therapy is provided for: • Obesity and over weight • Weight maintenance • Diabetes mellitus and hypoglycemia • Child hood obesity • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies • Anemia • Kidney diseases • Liver diseases • Osteoporosis • Skin problems • Hair fall • Gastric diseases • CHO mal absorptions • Gluten intolerances • Lactose intolerances • Food allergy • Poor eating habits among children • Eating disorders • Ulcers • High cholesterol • Cardio vascular diseases • Cancer • Nutrition during life span . Old age • Sports and fitness • Pre and post surgery diets The clinical nutritionist takes care of all enteral and parenteral nutrition required by the patients. Specific formulas and fluids are given according to the patients’ condition. All patients admitted to the hospital including day care patients are provided with food prescribed by the dietician, based on the patient’s clinical condition. The food is exclusively prepared by professional chefs and cooks in the Hospital kitchen. The patients have a choice of various cuisines including typical regional foods to choose from an a la carte menu. Hot food is always available to hospital patients who are admitted late in the day or night or miss meal times due to treatment. Meals are served to patients in sophisticated ready to serve Burlodge trolleys. These meal distribution systems ensure hot foods are served hot and cold food served cold. The diet served to the patients is prescribed on the basis of nutritive values calculated and planned by the dietician. In the out patient department, the dietician also prescribes personalized diet regimes planned to meet the nutritional requisites of the patient to fight diseases like obesity and diabetes. Under the effective management of the catering supervisor there is a full fledged cafeteria and coffee shop for out patients, visitors and staff. Mostly the food is served in three styles - regular, VIP and VVIP. Even the tableware for each section is different. The department works round the clock for patients and requests for organic food are also catered to.
